On April 5, The Academy of Sciences of Torino announced the election of KUIAS Director-General Shigefumi Mori as a foreign member. The Academy of Sciences of Torino, founded in the 1783, is a historic scientific academy.
Mori studies algebraic geometry, and is known for discovering the notion of “extremal ray” that greatly contributed to the studies of classification of algebraic three-folds and birational transformations. He proved the existence of “minimal models for three-dimensional algebraic varieties” and for that he was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1990.
