Deputy Director-General Susumu Noda
The Rank Prize, founded by the British industrialist and philanthropist Lord J. Arthur Rank, is awarded biennially in the fields of nutrition and optoelectronics to individuals who have made significant contributions to science by transforming an initial idea into practical applications that have benefited – or have the potential to benefit – humanity.
Professor Noda was selected for his contribution to the conceptualization and development of the photonic crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) technology, a versatile and high-performance semiconductor laser technology poised to impact a wide range of applications.
The prize-giving ceremony will take place in June 2026.
